Essential Job Duties

Join our team as a Equine and Farm Animal Medical Support Technician where you’ll provide essential care and technical support for large animal patients in a teaching hospital environment. This position plays a vital role in supporting veterinarians, students, interns, and house officers through hands-on patient care, clinical assistance, and hospital operations. You will also maintain a clean, safe, and organized work environment in compliance with hospital and regulatory standards.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Deliver high-quality technical support and patient care, including treatments, monitoring, and husbandry for all equine and farm animal patients.
  • Triage and treat emergency cases while maintaining professionalism and calm communication under pressure.
  • Assist veterinarians during exams, procedures, and treatments, ensuring safe and effective animal handling and restraint.
  • Support teaching and training for students, interns, and house officers.
  • Maintain clinical supplies and equipment, ensuring proper function and repair scheduling.
  • Promote compliance with hospital and infectious disease protocols to protect patients, staff, and students.
  • Manage inventory, billing accuracy, and patient documentation while coordinating with other hospital services.
  • Perform physical work for extended periods, including lifting up to 70 pounds and safely handling large animals.

Other Responsibilities

  • Additional duties may be assigned as needed. Flexibility, dependability, and attention to detail are important for success in this role.
  • Participate in an on-call, weekend, and holiday rotation as needed.
  • Assist across hospital services during high-volume or emergency situations.

Minimum Experience/Education

Completion of an accredited training program in the area of assignment; or equivalent combination of training and experience.
 
Some positions may require additional Training, Certifications, or Licensure.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience as an equine technician in a clinical or referral/tertiary care setting.
  • Previous experience in a veterinary teaching hospital environment.
  • Proven ability to handle and care for large animals safely and effectively.
  • Strong working knowledge of clinical equipment and hospital information systems.
  • Registered Veterinary Technician (RVT) in the State of North Carolina preferred. 

Required License or Certification

  • A valid NC driver’s license must be obtained within 60 days of start date and must be maintained throughout employment.
