Essential Job Duties

The Dermatology Service at North Carolina State University’s College of Veterinary Medicine is seeking a motivated and collaborative Research Specialist to join our dynamic team. This role supports innovative research programs focused on uncovering the causes and developing treatments for skin diseases in animals—with direct relevance to advancing human medicine.

As a key member of our interdisciplinary research community, the Research Specialist will contribute to projects that bridge dermatology, neuroscience, and immunology, fostering scientific discovery and clinical impact. The position plays a vital role in supporting our mission to:

  • Conduct impactful basic and translational research.
  • Investigate disease mechanisms and evaluate new therapies through clinical trials.
  • Train veterinary students, interns, and residents in modern research and clinical methods.

Essential Job Duties:

  • Independently design, perform, and analyze cellular and molecular biology experiments.
  • Maintain accurate and organized research records; assist in data analysis, grant writing, and manuscript preparation.
  • Develop, optimize, and troubleshoot laboratory methods and protocols.
  • Conduct literature reviews to support experimental design and innovation.
  • Manage and maintain research sample inventories, including blood biobanks.
  • Oversee daily laboratory operations, including safety compliance, equipment maintenance, supply management, and expense tracking.
  • Train students, interns, residents, and faculty in laboratory techniques and equipment use.
  • Support clinical trials, including IACUC protocol preparation, data collection, and sample analysis.
  • Perform other duties as assigned to support departmental goals and priorities.

Minimum Experience/Education

Bachelor’s degree in a discipline related to the area of assignment; or an equivalent combination of training and experience.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Hands-on experience with molecular and cellular biology techniques such as DNA/RNA isolation, PCR (including qPCR), gel electrophoresis, ELISA, and cell culture.
  • Proven ability to design experiments, analyze data, and troubleshoot laboratory assays effectively.
  • Strong organizational and documentation skills, with proficiency in maintaining accurate research records and databases.
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate scientific information clearly in both written and verbal formats.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office and basic data analysis or graphing software.
